Looking to Rent a Home? Look out for this Craig’s List Scam!
A member of Reading-Berks Association of Realtors recently pointed out this scam which targets their vacant, for sale properties.
The scammer will locate the property then list it on Craig’s List as a rental. When the consumer contacts the scammer via email, they receive a response apologizing that the scammer is unable to meet them in person to show them the property, and also, is hearing impaired, so email is the best way to continue to correspond.
The scammer will ask for personal details and a deposit, promising to mail the keys to the consumer.
A reputable Realtor® would always meet you and show you the home. Scams like this are a good reason to always check the credentials of the agent you are working with whether you are buying, selling or renting. Never give personal information out to an unknown online presence.
You can always check credentials with the Reading-Berks Association of Realtors. We can let you know if the person you are dealing with possesses a valid real estate license. All of our REALTOR® members can be found on our website at https://www.realestateinberks.com/membership/.
