As someone who has had one too many terrifying experiences as a REALTOR®, it is important to never let your guard down. As REALTORS® we are in vulnerable situations every day. From a busy suburban neighborhood in broad daylight to a high-rise open house on a weekend. The only way we can ensure that we are safe, is to take our safety into our own hands. Having a safety plan gives you control. A safety plan is a proactive approach, rather than reactive when in a scary position. If we are in a situation where we need to react, it may be too late. When I feared for my life, I vowed to myself that I would take control of my own safety to prevent a crime before it happens. With the hustle and bustle this time of year, it is easy to lose a safety focus. Did you know that 31% of REALTORS® have felt unsafe during an open house, and 58% of National Association of REALTORS® members use a smartphone safety app to track whereabouts with alerts in case of an emergency? Do you have a safety plan for yourself and your selling clients?
Here are a few important tips to remember during the holidays and beyond.
Plan to have those package deliveries promptly removed from the front door. If your client displays gifts under the tree or other, keep them out of view and away from windows.
Clients should not hide a key outside. They could leave a copy of a house key with family, friends, or leave with a neighbor.
Do not make announcements on social media that a home is vacant or ready to be occupied (clients may have already moved or are traveling).
Clients should tell a neighbor or friend when they are going to be out of town. It may be beneficial for neighbors to know your real estate plans (open house, showings, staging).
Never go into areas of the property with a potential buyer where you could be cornered or trapped (i.e. attic).
Invest time in ongoing safety education and tools, such as an easy to use mobile app. Always trust your instincts and prioritize your own safety.
Lastly, having a safety plan is important all year. Make a commitment to year-round safety as it relates to working with clients, open houses, cyber security and more. Always follow the safety protocols put in place by your state or local REALTOR® Association and brokerage. Happy Holidays!
